lyrics

Can I walk on this?
The darkness stretches over a clumsy stretch of white, and still that shiny fingernail on my back, those inky voices, talking in whispers, mothers and sisters and sisters of sisters, yearn to be kissed, yet crave the safety of mist and the blue chill over this quilt.

Can I walk on this? Can I slip underneath unnoticed?
Only my feet and the years know the way to this place
Where I'll wait for the Mermaids' Call,
I'm sure the Mermaids call...

Can I talk in this?
My hands know every movement but my mouth is down in sleep; those liquid voices calling, I cannot subsist in this murk that caresses my hair and my lips and dissolves all my dressings; rest, rest: light behind that curtain, gossamer, wavering thing.

If I speak in this, can they promise I'll be heard forever?
Only my heart and the years know the way to this place,
Where I'll wait for the Mermaids' Call,
I'm sure the Mermaids call...

Am I a pawn in this?
The depth upon my shoulders, warmly pressing on my cheeks, weeks into years, years into lives, lives into mist, mist over ships and towns, glittering wrapper for sounds only known to the drowning; they dive and they crown to be unwound and gowned, and to wade in and wait for the sound...

Can I walk on this? Can I slip underneath unnoticed?
Only my feet and the years know the way to this place
Where I'll wait for the Mermaids' Call,
I'm sure the Mermaids call...
